Proposal for Industry-Aligned Standards

I found our organization to align ourselves with: it's the WASP Interact. WASP stands for the Web Accessibility Standards Project. As their site puts it...

The WaSP InterAct curriculum project seeks to ease the challenges schools around the world face as they prepare their students for careers on the Web. WaSP InterAct is a living curriculum designed to change and keep pace with the fast moving industry.

I wholeheartedly agree with the WASP Interact set of proposed standards, and I propose that we align our curriculum with their set of standards.

Curricular Standards

I've included areas of standards to adopt for Secondary Web Design Curriculum. These are currently (as of 11/2/09) a subset of the curriculum on the WASP Interact Site:

Internet Fundamentals (http://interact.webstandards.org/curriculum/foundation/internet-fundamentals?comp)

  • Introduction to the Internet
    • Outline the history of the internet
    • Define web-related keywords (WWW, browser, internet, etc.)
    • Define internet technology keywords (html, xhtml, css, php, JavaScript, Information Architecture, etc.)
    • Explain the relationship between client and server computer citing differences in purpose, hardware, and location and maintenance
  • Searching & Finding Information
  •

Front-End Development (http://interact.webstandards.org/curriculum/front-end-development/)

  • XHTML syntax
  • XHTML elements
  • Basic Web Design Concepts
  • Validation
  • CSS
  • Site Structure

Technical Skills Assessment

I have uploaded a modified technical skills assessment proposal for a Web Design class that focuses on the materials above (Front-end Development). This was added 12/15/2010, and is still a draft and is therefore up for review & approval by the state of Oregon. Please look it over and suggest any changes.

Other Sites

In trying to find a national organization with which to align ourselves, I found other sites of interest:
